When is Enough, Enough?

Menopause. It’s a normal, natural thing all women go through, so shouldn’t we just let “nature take its course” and put up with it until it passes?

That depends.

What may seem like mild hormonal symptoms to one women may be absolutely debilitating to other women. We all experience menopause differently. This is not a ‘one size fits all’ situation. We all have different hormone levels at different times.

While one woman may experience occasional hot flashes, another woman may experience major depression, crippling anxiety, serious insomnia, aches and pains, digestive issues, weight gain and more.

So when is enough, enough? When do we wave a white flag and say, “Can someone please help me, I’m drowning here!”

That’s a tough call. That depends on your own individual situation, your symptoms and how much they are affecting the rest of your life. Ask yourself these questions:

  1. Are my symptoms affecting my physical health to the point where I am getting sick more often, at risk for certain diseases, or just so distracting that I cannot function well in my regular life?
  2. Are my symptoms affecting my career? Am I still able to function and perform well enough at my job? Am I getting along with my co-workers?
  3. Are my symptoms affecting important relationships in my life? How are my moods? Is my marriage intact or is it failing?
  4. How am I in my day-to-day life? Am I able to accomplish the same things I normally have? Can I get through the day smoothly? Can I sleep (most nights)? Can I focus, think and comprehend well?
  5. Is depression or anxiety taking over my life and causing me to miss out, avoid or hide from people, events and things?

While hot flashes, insomnia, mood changes and weight gain may be a normal and expected part of peri- and menopause, answering yes to any of the above questions may help you find that your menopause symptoms are interfering with your life.

And that’s the time to seek professional care. Seeking professional care is not a quick and easy route either. You may find you have to try more than one medical professional who will find the right treatment for you.

For some it may mean following the health and wellness route—eliminating toxic and inflammatory foods, determining your specific nutritional needs and changing your diet.

Additionally, adding in a new exercise plan and making other healthy lifestyle changes may be all you need to get back to your old self. Other women may find other alternative ways to support themselves during menopause by taking vitamins, natural herbal menopause supplements, etc.

For others, it may mean trying out various kinds of hormone therapy until you find the right ‘fit’ for you. Again, this is not an instant thing—it may take a bit of trial and error until you find the right fit, but it can make a world of difference.

Bottom line: Ask your friends who are going through menopause what worked for them, find support with others, ask doctors, nurses, and alternative medical providers what the choices are and find what works for you. But don’t suffer in silence if menopause is affecting your life. This is the time for you to find YOU, find your passions and ignite your fire. Menopause can be a reawakening and rebirth, but first you have to navigate the symptoms.
